It all started with children’s games. Rooted in the groundbreaking improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959, and a comedy revolution began. Co-founded by Bernie Sahlins, Howard Alk, and Spolin’s son Paull Sills, the small cabaret theater grew to become the most influential and prolific comedy empire in the world, developing an entirely unique way of creating art and fostering generation after generation of superstars.

The Drill Hall is one of Base31's most iconic spaces, known for its soaring ceilings, industrial character, and powerful acoustics. Once part of a historic training site, it now hosts concerts that feel both intimate and electric. Accessing the Site
Base31 offers multiple parking areas close to the Drill Hall. When you arrive, follow event signage and staff directions to the nearest available lot. The site is walkable, with lighting and pathways guiding you to the venue. Please allow time to park and make your way to the performance.
