Mel Hilmi is a singer-songwriter and producer raised in Belleville, Ontario. Throughout her professional career she has written extensively with other artists leading to a finalist spot in the International Songwriting Competition based in Nashville, TN as well as multiple song placements in film and television.

In 2012 after producing and releasing a solo album entitled Revolution, Mel attended the audio production program at The Harris Institute in Toronto to hone her craft as a producer and engineer. It is here she met and joined alt-folk band The Belleregards, touring extensively across North America and the UK, including landing a spot at Mariposa Folk Festival in 2014 and the Calgary Folk Club in 2018. The Belleregards released two full albums and two EPs opening for artists such as Donovan Woods and Begonia. Individual and co-written materials have been licensed to the Showcase Network television series Lost Girl, Lost and Found Music Studios/The Next Step (Family Channel, NETFLIX) and Space Channel’s Dark Matter.
Mel is currently working on a solo project under the moniker HILMI set to be released in fall 2026. HILMI navigates life being born into the Iraqi diaspora and the duality as a first generation Canadian, one degree of separation from war.
